The war of blog search engines has caused all kinds of contenders to enter the ring. Some of the old standbys entered the arena a few years ago when blog search engines were expected to be a booming industry. The consumer market blog search is not as booming as once predicted but there are still some people that want a good blog search engine to limit searches to blogs that are pertinent, relevant and up to date.
Some people use different blog search engines for different purposes, depending on what blogs they are looking for. This has caused a competition that is driven by advertising revenues more than anything else in most cases. The war of blog search engines is becoming driven by more than the willingness to provide a comprehensive blog search. Many businesses are using professional means of tracking blogs, but they still may not be as good as doing it yourself, in most cases.
Google Blogsearch is good for the most up-to-date news stories, but Technorati might be used for searching a public web page, even though it has a lot of focus on advertising. IceRocket only lets you organize results by data and sometimes might catch something the others miss and sometimes not.
Ask.com has spam control but it also indexes feeds that aren’t blogs. Friendfeed is also a blog search engine, but it searches information that is linked to Friendfeed accounts and not outside sources. Sphere seems to be a blog search engine that works without some of the downsides the others have.
In the war of blog search engines, there is no clear winner as they all have some good and some bad. You can never be certain that you are getting the relevant search results that is all encompassing, no matter what. While Sphere offers more advantages than some of the others, it is not necessarily a big name, when it comes to competing with Google, even though it may be better.
The thing to understand about searching blog search engines is that you may need to use the one that offers the most relevant blogs and you might need to combine several to get all of the blog search results you feel are out there.
Other blog search engines such as Blog Pulse, Blog Digger and Blog Lines are in the war of blog search engines and more can be expected to pop up as time goes on. Similar to the birth of Twitter, you never know who the next big contender will be.
