Can Social Networking Hurt?
By floshow25 | June 2, 2009
Pros and cons of social networking are something that Internet marketing companies analyze, when looking at the best way to market a business. Sometimes, there can be positive experiences that come from social networking and other times, it might not seem that productive.
Social networking is like a virtual meeting room where people discuss all types of things, good and bad. When it comes to Internet marketingg, it is used to promote blogs, post bulletins and other things like new product announcements. It allows for immediate reaction and feedback and makes it easy for customers to get in touch with you. Most social networks are free to join, so it doesn’t cost anything to get your name in front of more people.
On the other hand, some say that social networking may give you superficial reactions and responses and you may not act in the best interest. Also, it can be time consuming keeping up with the messages and blogs or watching for comments you can use. It is easy for some of the conversations to become distracted or too personal and then they don’t serve much purpose when it comes to Internet marketing.
Many companies are having their sales people join some of these social networking sites in hopes of generating more sales. It never hurts to have all of your bases covered when it comes to Internet marketing, as long as it is time spent productively. Since the social networks can be productivity killers, you may need to monitor the situation to see if it is worthwhile, in your particular case.
The other thing about social networking is that there are still a lot of people that do not use these avenues for anything but personal usage, if at all. It might not be as productive as you are expecting, when it comes to increasing sales.
For personal usage, you have to worry about security and identity theft. A business may not have the same concerns, although, if your research and development teams are throwing ideas out, you could risk having a competitor pick up on your money making idea and beat you to the initial punch.
Because so many people and businesses are using the Internet for all kinds of purposes, the same is true of the social networking sites. Businesses started getting involved by networking with colleagues or looking for better jobs, and the next thing you know, companies are using the social networking sites for pushing their products. At some point, it may become that the original purposes of the social networking sites will fail to interest those that were once interested in them, and won’t reach the ones that never were.
When it comes to answering the questions about whether social networking can hurt, in general the answer would be to get your name in front of as many people as you can for successful Internet marketing. You just have to be sure that it is secure and productive, instead of a time waster, in your particular case.
