5 Article Marketing Blunders That You Should Never Commit

By floshow25 | June 3, 2009

If the title sounds a little authoritarian, it is. Think of it as the eleventh commandment. If you’re in the business of marketing articles, there are a few errors that can completely nullify your hard work. The good news is that they are easy to avoid. Here we’ll look at five such errors presented in no particular order since they all amount to an immediate death sentence for your well–or not so well–crafted lyrical wonders that we call articles.

Read the site guidelines
So you spend hours or days crafting an article or you hire a professional writer to do it for you. And then you submit it to an article directory. But let’s say that it doesn’t exactly adhere to the site’s guidelines for publication. Guess what happens to all that hard work? That’s right, it’s wasted, garbage. It’ll probably be deleted without even a letter acknowledging receipt. Now this isn’t because article directory owners or administrators are cantankerous ogres who delight in making other people sad. This is because article directories receive hundreds or thousand of submissions . . . well, a lot anyway. If you can’t take the time to read the guidelines, why should they take the time to tell you so or even read your entire article?

Keep it original
In this day when so much of internet content consists of the spinning and re-spinning of private label rights and free reprint articles originality becomes even more valuable. There is nothing wrong with adapting PLR or free reprint articles, but know that pretty much every single one of your competitors is doing the same thing. What if their hired gun of a writer is better than yours? You might be better off coming up with an original article than merely rearranging the words of another.

Make it error-free
It’s called proofreading, and it’s the easiest part of crafting an article. You say you have brilliant marketing ideas or know everything there is to know about antique thimbles but don’t care much for all that grammar and spelling stuff? Then find one of us nerds who actually liked English class and let us have a brief look. And if you think all this stuffy rulemaking about spelling and grammar is just a lot of elitism, consider the following. You’ve heard a lot of raving about the importance of search engine optimization, and now your firmly seated on the bandwagon. What do you think happens to your keyword-rich article when one of the words in the key phrase is misspelled?

Use the resource box properly
This goes back to the commandment about reading the guidelines. If you’re allowed three hyperlinks use three. Don’t pass up the opportunity by using only one. Or if you’re allowed only one, don’t try and trick the editor by shoving in three.

Make it relevant
You can’t make a square peg go in a round hole. This isn’t rocket surgery . . . or is it rocket science? Anyway, you can’t use a PLR article on space travel and then try using it to get traffic headed to a medical site. Well, you can try.
