10 Email Marketing Tips and Tricks
By floshow25 | June 2, 2009
We all receive spam or junk mail. Most of us let our spam filters take care of that, and for the remaining messages that make it through the filter we casually hit the delete key and never give it a second thought. But we should. For those of us who send marketing email, the junk mail we receive can be a goldmine for learning how to improve email. Before we get to that, let’s look at nine other easy steps for improving the success rate of our email marketing campaign.
The Subject Line
The subject line is the first thing we see, and often it’s the only deciding factor in whether the message goes unread into the trash folder. In short, if it looks like junk, it is junk. When was the last time you intentionally opened a message with triple exclamation marks, hideous spelling errors, or the word “lottery?”
Choose a Good Looking Format
If your email looks lame your services or products probably are too.
Consider Paying for the Services of a Writer/Editor
You don’t have to go out and hire the most expensive email marketing company or an ad agency. What little you spend can multiply many times over if you can keep that email out of the junk folder. We’re constantly bombarded by marketing salvos, and we’re always looking for reasons to classify new information as junk. A few grammatical or spelling errors is reason enough. Writers are less expensive than most people think. An email template could cost just a few bucks. How much is one repeat customer worth?
Know What Your Message Looks Like on the Other End
If you don’t happen to have Outlook, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, and a Yahoo, Hotmail, and a Gmail account, then chances are you and any two of your friends do. Send test versions of your email to many different destinations just to ensure that the look you wanted transfers.
Learn About Spam Filters
Just like we look for the red flags of spam, so do the filters. Learn what email traits spam filters recognize and avoid them.
Give an Opt-out Choice
That message at the end of some marketing email is a sign of courtesy, and professionalism. It says you believe your product is so good you don’t need to invade a person’s day with junk mail.
Use the Right Bulk Sending Program
Don’t know which one to use? Search for ones that offer free trials.
Pay Attention to What Works
More importantly, pay attention to what does not work. If your most recent email is getting lousy returns, don’t be so quick to blame it on the economy. Get in there and find a way to improve the message.
Make It “Personal”
We decide if something is junk mail based on if it is really meant for us in particular or if goes to everyone on the block. Find ways to give email a personal touch. This goes back to the point about hiring a professional writer. It also relates to the next easy way to improve your marketing email.
Start Reading Junk Mail
Now back to what to what was mentioned at the beginning. Look in your trash folder and read the marketing messages you have manually trashed. The first step in improving your own marketing email is understanding what turns you off as a customer.
